Storage that uses the space you already have

Nobody buys storage because they have a spare room. They buy it because the rooms they have are full, and the space that is left is the awkward kind: the wall above a toilet, the cupboard under a sink with a pipe through the middle of it, the garage floor that is doing the job the garage walls should be doing.

Everything on this page exists to turn one of those into usable space, without building anything.

Bathroom storage

Bathrooms run out of surfaces before they run out of room. The two spaces worth reclaiming are the wall above the toilet, which almost every bathroom wastes, and the shower wall itself. Over-toilet shelving stands on the floor and uses the height. Adhesive shower shelving fixes to tile without drilling through the waterproofing behind it, which matters more than it sounds in a room built to keep water out.

Bedroom storage

Wardrobes are built almost entirely for hanging, which suits about half of what people own. Knitwear stretches on a hanger, folded clothes slide off a rail, and bulky bedding has nowhere to go at all between seasons. Hanging shelves turn a section of rail into flat storage, and compression bags take the air out of a duvet so it fits under a bed instead of filling a shelf.

Garage storage

A garage is the one room where the floor is usually doing the walls' job. Freestanding steel shelving carries serious weight without drilling into masonry, wall mounted tool racks get long handled tools off the floor where they fall over in groups, and bike storage on a wall or a rack gives back the space four bikes take when they are lying down.

Kitchen and laundry storage

The cupboard under a sink is built around an obstacle, and most of what it holds sits in one layer with the tall bottles at the back. A two tier organiser uses the height above the trap and slides out so you can see what is there. In the pantry, matched airtight containers hold more than the same shelf of half-open bags, because a shelf is limited by its most awkward object.

Office storage

Home offices need storage that moves, because the work does. Rolling carts and drawer units bring supplies to wherever you are working and go back afterwards, which a fitted cupboard cannot. Where the contents are small and easily lost, more drawers beats more volume every time.

Outdoor storage

Not every garden needs a shed, and a shed is a building: a base, an afternoon, and it stays when you move. A weatherproof resin store needs no treating or painting and does not rust, and a portable shelter puts up in about ten minutes and folds into a bag when the season changes.

Before you order

Most storage that goes back does so for one reason: a measurement nobody took. It is usually a single number rather than the whole product. Floor to the top of your cistern for an over-toilet unit. The width of the gap for a rolling cart. Your wheel size for a bike rack. What the wall is made of for anything that hangs on it.
