Choosing storage that actually gets used
SpaceSaver sells storage and organisation products across the UK. This page is the short version of what we have learned selling them: what actually makes storage work, which type suits which problem, and the one measurement that decides whether something fits.
Storage is not about buying more space
Almost nobody who buys storage is short of a room. They are short of usable levels inside the rooms they already have. Look under a sink and most of the volume is air above the bottles. Look above a toilet and there is a blank wall doing nothing. Look at a garage and the floor is doing a job the walls should be doing.
Every product here exists to convert one of those wasted spaces into something you can put things in, without building anything.
The one measurement that matters
More storage goes back for being the wrong size than for being poor quality, and it is almost always one number rather than the whole product. An over-toilet unit lives or dies on the height from your floor to the top of the cistern. A rolling cart depends on the width of the gap it slides into. A bike rack depends on your wheel size, and a wall rack depends on what your wall is made of.
So every product page here names the measurement that decides it, near the top, rather than burying a dimensions table at the bottom. Take that one measurement before you order and the rest follows.
Drilling, and when you can avoid it
Plenty of people cannot drill, either because they rent or because the wall is not suitable. A good part of this range is built for that: adhesive shower shelving that fixes to tile without going through the waterproofing behind it, freestanding bike racks that stand on the floor, under-sink organisers that stand in the cupboard, and shelving that needs nothing but a level floor.
Where something does need fixing to a wall, we say so plainly and we say what kind of wall it needs. A tool rack rated to 205 kg is only as good as the fixings behind it, and no product can compensate for plasterboard and a cavity anchor.
What a load rating actually promises
Shelving is sold on a number, and the number nearly always assumes the weight is spread across the shelf rather than piled in one corner. That is why our shelving pages say "evenly distributed" rather than leaving it as small print. A shelf rated to 159 kg spread out is not a shelf rated to 159 kg in the middle.
The same goes for adhesive fixings. An 18 kg rating assumes clean, dry, fully cured tile and 24 hours before you load it. Most reports of a shelf coming off the wall trace back to a surface that was not properly clean when the pad went on.
Matching the storage to the room
Damp rooms need materials chosen for damp: stainless steel in a shower, resin outdoors, powder coated steel in an unheated garage. MDF with a water resistant finish copes with bathroom air and not with standing water, and we would rather say that than let you find out.
Breathable storage suits clothes in rotation; sealed storage suits bedding going away for a season. They are different jobs, which is why we sell both fabric storage bags and vacuum compression bags rather than pretending one covers the other.
